PhD student position

in the project A3 “High-Resolution Stress-Field Mapping in Biological Networks and Cells“ of the Collaborative Research Center 755. The project aims at designing nano-scale sensors to measure stress in biopolymer model networks and inside living cells.

The position is initially open for one year starting immediately and can be extended till June 30th 2015. Salaries are in accordance with the German state regulated public service salary scale (E 13 TV-L) with 50% of the regular working hours (19.9 h).

The candidate is expected to:

* Set up single-molecule FRET in combination with optical traps * Combine DNA nano-structures with FRET pairs as sensors * Calibrate force sensors in model systems * Employ force sensors to map the stress/strain distributions in networks and cells

Qualifications:
Applicants should have a diploma or Masters degree in physics or biophysics or a closely related field and a strong interest in working in an interdisciplinary group with scientists from physics, chemistry, engineering and biology on the mechanics of biopolymer networks and
cells. Working experience in the following areas is desirable: fluorescence microscopy /
spectroscopy, biophysics of cells, basic biochemistry. A good knowledge of commonly used software (MS Office, MatLab, LabView, and data graphing) would be an advantage. Fluency in English and the ability to work in a team are necessary.

Complete applications should be submitted by email by May 15, 2012 to Dr. Florian Rehfeldt or Prof. Dr. Christoph Schmidt, Third Institute of Physics – Biophysics, Friedrich-Hund-Platz 1, 37077 Göttingen, Germany, and should include the usual documents. Application documents
